Volunteering Development

Adult learning

Training of adult volunteers is one of the primary roles of every Scout area or county. In Gwent, we have an enthusiastic and supportive team of trainers, advisers, facilitators and supporters.

We run an annual programme of courses, including leadership training, safeguarding, and ‘Nights Away’ – skills for camping and other residential experiences with young people. We also run occasional specialist ongoing training where there is demand. We’re also here to support your personal development through self-directed learning. Scouting training for managers is now provided at a country/regional level.

What learning do I need to do?

Scouts learning and training is changing in the last few months of 2024, but there will be a transition period for the next couple of years, and all completed learning will still count.

Indoor climbing / high ropes permit training

Want to take the first steps towards running climbing activities for your section?

No prior knowledge or experience of climbing is required, and we won’t make you climb anything you’re not comfortable with, but a basic ability and willingness to get on a wall and climb (if only sideways) is required.

The 2-day course will cover training towards a Scout activity permit for use of artificial climbing structures. Assessments will take place separately, following consolidation and visits to public climbing walls.  The topics covered include:

    –  Warming up and using games in climbing activities

    – Spotting, bouldering and traversing

    – Knots used in climbing

    – Fitting climbing harnesses

    – Communication during climbing

    – Clipping and tying in

    – Belaying methods, holding falls, lowering

    – Problem solving

    – Ground anchors

    – Equipment inspection and maintenance

    – Movement skills and preventing injury

    – Site-specific high ropes activities at 28th Newport (High Cross)

Cost and booking details to follow.
